It’s Coming Home! 'The Soldiers' Kick Off International Celebrity Football Match during Remembrance Week

‘The Soldiers’, the singing 'band of brothers' who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, have agreed to perform their new single ‘Coming Home’ ahead of The Heroes Cup, the celebrity football match in support of Help for Heroes.

The match takes place the day after Remembrance Day, on Thursday November 12th at Reading’s Madejski Stadium. The game will feature some of the biggest names in football, sport, music, film and TV as England take on the World, to honour our forces heroes past and present.

The trio, known simply as ‘The Soldiers’, are decorated veterans and serving soldiers in their day job. They recorded ‘Coming Home’ during breaks in their duties. The song is also the title of their album which was released earlier this month. Since the release of Coming Home the lads have been on a media whirl of TV interviews, and have been taken to the hearts of millions with their down to earth attitude and heart warming songs that are set to take the charts by storm.

The group is made up of, 24 year old Lance Corporal Ryan Idzi, the youngest and most recognisable member appeared on X Factor and made it through to the Boot Camp stage of the show after singing Lean On Me. From Caerphilly, South Wales, Idzi has already served in Iraq and Afganistan as part of the 20th Armoured Brigade. Described by Danni Minogue as ‘gorgeous’, she said “Ryan’s good looks are sure to melt the hearts of millions”. Ryan says “it will be an absolute honour to open the Heroes Cup and perform our songs for Reading and I‘m bringing my boots just in case I get a chance to play with all those legends”

Ryan is joined by Gulf War veteran Sergeant Major Gary Chilton joined the Royal Armoured Corps in 1984 straight from school and has performed around the world including a special show with Jools Holland at Twickenham. Gary fought in the Gulf War and presented with The Gulf Medal by HRH The Prince of Wales upon his return.

With the third member of the group being Sergeant Richie Maddock’s from Oldham, Greater Manchester who enlisted into the British Army at the age of 16 and has travelled throughout Europe, Canada, Cyprus, Finland and The Falkland Islands. Maddock’s also fought in The Gulf War and was also awarded The Gulf Medal.

Richie says "Our songs are feel-good songs that you'd associate with normal guys in the army, He said ‘With a Little Help from my Friends’ was particularly pertinent. "You could say that when you're a little bit down there's always someone there to pick you up, brush you down and get on with the day's work. That's just so typical of army life”. He adds, “Proceeds from the album will be going to Help for Heroes and other groups which support our forces colleagues"

The England squad for The Heroes Cup up will include footballers: Andy Cole, Paul Gascoigne, Les Ferdinand and Des Walker, Celebrities Paddy McGuinness, Danny Dyer, Rupert Graves, Angus Deayton, Simon Webbe and Chris Fountain plus sportsmen Mark Ramprakash, Darren Gough, Alec Stewart, Kyran Bracken.

Players already signed up for the Rest of The World are footballers Ally McCoist, Steffen Freund, Toto Schillachi, Tugay, Jurgen Kohler, Owen Coyle, Thomas Helmer and Anders Limpar, sportsmen Iwan Thomas, Kenny Logan and Justin Marshall, actor Tamar Hassan and TV presenters Craig Doyle & Donal Intyre.

Lining up alongside the stars, and making it a true celebration and tribute of our forces personnel, will be current servicemen representing the Army, Navy and RAF who have been selected to play for their country and as representatives of the armed forces.

On the addition of The Soldiers to The Heroes Cup, players spokesman Paul Gascoigne commented: “It looks like its going to be a great night and really emotional, the lads sing from the heart and it will be a great way to kick things off. What our troops are doing is amazing, they are true heroes and they deserve all of the tributes and support they are getting. We have a chance to pay our respects by giving them a great night of football.”

Proceeds from The Heroes Cup and of The Soldier’s debut album will be going to Help for Heroes and other groups which support British forces.

The Soldiers will be performing before the match which kicks off at 7.45pm on Thursday 12th November.
